Slitting and roll control: width, roll diameter and splices

The last step before dispatch often decides how well the paper runs on the customer's line.

Published: 2026-10-16 · Category: Process

Filter paper ships as rolls and is used on the customer's own pleating and creasing equipment. Slitting and winding look simple, but they decide whether the roll runs cleanly: width variation shows up as uneven pleats, wrong tension as slack winding or wrinkles, and too many badly placed splices as unplanned stops.

Width and tolerance

Width follows the customer's converting equipment and element size, and the tolerance has to be stated. Too loose and pleat edges end up ragged, spoiling the element face; too tight and slitting becomes difficult with more waste. Edge quality matters as well: a clean cut without fuzz or dust, because both turn into contamination and cleaning work downstream.

Roll diameter and winding tension

  • Roll diameter: match the customer's unwind shaft and handling space - too large is awkward to load, too small means frequent changes and more splices.
  • Tension: too high stretches the paper and produces wrinkles and distorted edges; too low gives a slack roll that shifts in transit.
  • Cores: bore, wall and strength must suit the unwind mechanism so cores do not deform at speed.

Splice count and position

  • Keep splices per roll to an agreed maximum;
  • Keep them away from critical stations on the customer's line, such as automatic splicing or continuous pleating sections;
  • Make them flat and even so they do not jump or tear at guide rollers;
  • Mark splice positions on the roll end or packaging so operators can see them coming.

Packaging and transport

Paper takes up moisture and changes behaviour, so packaging has to handle both moisture and compression: a moisture barrier inside, protection against crushing outside, edge protectors on the roll ends. Stacking height follows roll weight and packaging strength; for long journeys, palletise and secure the load.

In short: agreeing width tolerance, edge quality, roll diameter and splice rules at order stage is far cheaper than handling claims later. Send width, roll diameter, splice limit and packing requirements with your enquiry.
